Drinks from Famous Hotels &
Restaurants

Almost since the beginning, hotels and
restaurants have created signature drinks
served only at their establishments.  Some
caught on and have become well known
standards, but many have faded from
memory and deserve a rebirth.  Here are
some John has come across that he's
revived to great effect.

Stars & Characters

Bars have been honoring Hollywood royalty
since the early part of the 20th century, as
well as the characters they portrayed on the
silver screen.  Here are just a few...

Classic Martini

One of the many legends told about the invention of this most
famous of cocktails is that it was created in the nineteenth
century by
‘Professor’ Jerry Thomas of San Francisco’s
Occidental Hotel who named it after the nearby town of
Martinez.

Whatever its actual origins, by the 1950s an ad for a sales
manager job actually required that the applicant ‘should be able
to handle twelve martinis.’  Of course, in those days the average
martini cocktail glass was of the 3 ounce variety instead of the 7
ounce variety found in most bars nowadays.  Still, imagine trying
to conduct business after downing 5 of our present day martinis.

2 ounces gin
1 ounce dry vermouth
1 dash orange bitters
Olive, for garnish

Shake all the ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail
glass.  Garnish with olive.
